Ingredients

For the Toffee
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon red food coloring optional for a spooky effect
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Apples
  • 4 medium apples preferably Granny Smith
  • 4 pieces wooden sticks for dipping

Method

Prepare the Apples
  1. Wash and dry the apples thoroughly. Insert a wooden stick into the top of each apple.
  2. Place a baking sheet lined with parchment paper nearby for the dipped apples.
Make the Toffee
  1. In a saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Increase heat and bring to a boil without stirring. Use a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature.
  3. Once the mixture reaches 300°F (hard crack stage), remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and food coloring.
Dip the Apples
  1. Quickly dip each apple into the toffee, swirling to coat evenly. Allow excess to drip off.
  2. Place the dipped apples on the prepared baking sheet to cool and harden.
Serve
  1. Once the toffee has set, serve the apples as a spooky Halloween treat.
