  • 1 pound sweet Italian sausage (or ground turkey)
  • ¾ pound lean ground beef (or ground chicken)
  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 16 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • ¾ pound mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • ¾ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 (28 ounce) can of crushed tomatoes
  • 2 (6.5 ounce) cans of tomato sauce
  • 2 (6 ounce) cans of tomato paste
  • ½ cup of minced onion
  • 2 cloves of garlic, crushed
  • ½ cup of water
  • 2 tablespoons of white sugar
  • 4 tablespoons of chopped fresh parsley (divided)
  • 1 ½ teaspoons of dried basil leaves
  • 1 ½ teaspoons of salt (divided, or to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon of fennel seeds
  • ¼ teaspoon of ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sauce: Brown the sweet Italian sausage and lean ground beef with minced onion and crushed garlic in a Dutch oven over medium heat.
  2. Simmer the Sauce: Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, water, sugar, parsley, basil, salt, Italian seasoning, fennel seeds, and black pepper. Let it simmer covered for about 1½ hours.
  3. Cook the Noodles: Boil lasagna noodles until al dente; drain and rinse under cold water.
  4. Mix Cheese Filling: Combine ricotta cheese with an egg and remaining parsley and salt in a bowl.
  5. Assemble Lasagna: Start layering in a baking dish with meat sauce, noodles, ricotta mixture, mozzarella slices; repeat layers.
  6. Bake: Cover with foil and bake at 375°F for 25 minutes; remove foil and bake for another 25 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Rest Before Serving: Allow to rest for 15 minutes before slicing.
