Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 small Granny Smith apples
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup white sugar
  • 0.5 cup packed brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup water
  • 1 (9 inch) double-crust pie pastry

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Peel, core, and thinly slice the Granny Smith apples.
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the flour until it forms a paste; cook until fragrant.
  3. Add both sugars and water to the saucepan. Bring to a boil, then simmer for about 3 to 5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  4. Press half of the pie pastry into a 9-inch pie pan and roll out the remaining pastry for the lattice crust.
  5. Assemble by placing apple slices into the bottom crust, then weave the lattice strips over the top.
  6. Pour the sugar-butter mixture over the lattice crust and brush some onto it as well.
  7. Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F (220°C), then reduce temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for an additional 35 to 45 minutes until apples are tender.
